Healthy Retina

Cornea -- a protective, clear film that, like a window, lets light into the eye  Go back

Lens -- a flexible, clear mass that focuses light coming into the eye  Go back

Vitreous -- a gel-like material that fills the eye and gives it structure; also called the vitreous humor  Go back

Optic Nerve -- the main nerve through which visual signal are sent from the retina to the brain, where the signals are processed as vision  Go back

Iris -- muscles of the eye which alter the lens to allow the eye to focus; it is the iris that give an eye its color  Go back

Retina -- cell layers at the back of the eye which translate light into nerve signals, and passes them onto the optical nerve  Go back

Macula -- area within the retina, where central, focused vision is processed  Go back

Fovea -- the center of the macula  Go back

Blood Vessels -- these are tiny, and the blood that flows through them carry nutrients and oxygen to the retina, and carry wastes away  Go back

Periphery -- the outer part of the retina, where night vision and peripheral vision are processed  Go back
